Mailman Wizard Settings
If you use our control panel "wizard" to create a Mailman list, it sets certain Mailman options in response to three questions (such as "Is this a group discussion list or an announcement only list?").
Mailman experts may be interested in which options it actually sets.
- "Group discussion" vs. "Announcement only"
- "Public" vs. "private"
- "Keep archives" vs. "don't keep archives"
"Group discussion" vs. "Announcement only"
For a "group discussion" list, the following options are set:
- General Options > Maximum length in kilobytes (KB) of a message body: 40
- General Options > Should postings include the List-Post: header? Yes
- Privacy options > Sender filters > By default, should new list member postings be moderated? No
- Privacy options > Sender filters > Action to take when a moderated member posts to the list: Hold
- Privacy options > Sender filters > Text to include in any rejection notice to be sent to moderated members who post to this list: (none)
- Privacy options > Sender filters > Action to take for postings from non-members for which no explicit action is defined: Hold
- Content filtering > Should Mailman filter the content of list traffic according to the settings below? Yes
For an "announcement only" list, the following options are set:
- General Options > Maximum length in kilobytes (KB) of a message body: 5000
- General Options > Should postings include the List-Post: header? No
- Privacy options > Sender filters > By default, should new list member postings be moderated? Yes
- Privacy options > Sender filters > Action to take when a moderated member posts to the list: Reject
- Privacy options > Sender filters > Text to include in any rejection notice to be sent to moderated members who post to this list: "Sorry, this is an announcement-only list"
- Privacy options > Sender filters > Action to take for postings from non-members for which no explicit action is defined: Reject
- Content filtering > Should Mailman filter the content of list traffic according to the settings below? No
"Public" vs. "private"
For a "public" list, the following options are set:
- Privacy options > Subscription rules > Advertise this list when people ask what lists are on this machine? Yes
- Privacy options > Subscription rules > What steps are required for subscription? Confirm
- Archiving Options > Is archive file source for public or private archival? public
For a "private" list, the following options are set:
- Privacy options > Subscription rules > Advertise this list when people ask what lists are on this machine? No
- Privacy options > Subscription rules > What steps are required for subscription? Confirm and approve
- Archiving Options > Is archive file source for public or private archival? private
"Keep archives" vs. "don't keep archives"
For a "keep archives" list, the following option is set:
- Archiving Options > Archive messages? Yes
For a "don't keep archives" list, the following option is set:
- Archiving Options > Archive messages? No
