How do I disable the Dreamweaver "testing server"?

If you're using Dreamweaver and you see an error message saying "There is no testing server running on the server machine", you've accidentally enabled a feature called the Dreamweaver "testing server".

The testing server option can be useful for advanced users, but it requires additional configuration and makes publishing more complicated. If you don't know what it is and how to set it up, you almost certainly don't want to use it. We recommend that most customers avoid the testing server option.

Our instructions covering how to set up a new Dreamweaver "site" explain how to disable the testing server, but if you've accidentally enabled it and you're seeing the error message above, these instructions should fix it:

  1. Click the Site menu and choose Manage Sites
  2. Click the site name you want to edit, then click the Edit button
  3. Click the Advanced tab
  4. Click Testing Server in the left-hand column
  5. Set the server technology to None

That should solve it. If it doesn't, or you have trouble, you should probably just delete the existing Dreamweaver "site" (if you can do so without losing data) and set up a new Dreamweaver "site" with the correct settings.
