FileZilla

This answer is customized for cohousing.org. (change domain name)

This page explains how to set up the FileZilla FTP program to publish files to the top level of your Web site. FileZilla is a free, easy-to-use FTP program for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux that can be downloaded by visiting this page:

The instructions below are based on FileZilla 3.1.6 for Windows, although other versions are similar.

On this page:

Connecting with FileZilla

FileZilla gives you an extremely easy way to connect to our servers, called Quickconnect.

Start the FileZilla program from your Start menu, and you'll see spaces at the top of the screen asking for the server "Host", "Username", "Password" and "Port":

Host:ftp.tigertech.net
Username:cohousing.org (all lowercase)
Password:your account password
Port:leave blank (it will default to the correct port 21)

The window should look like this:

Then click Quickconnect. This will open a connection to your root html folder and the Remote Site section in FileZilla should update to show your Web site files. Although the exact files and folders will be different, it should look something like the following:

You can upload files to the server by dragging them from the left hand file browser called Local Site to the appropriate folder on the right hand file browser called Remote Site.

Having trouble?

If you encounter problems, it's possible that a firewall on your computer or network is interfering with the connection. To solve this problem, see the topic explaining how to change FileZilla's "transfer mode".

Using Quickconnect again

The next time you use the FileZilla program, the "Host", "Username" and "Password" boxes will be empty again. However, FileZilla has remembered them: just click the arrow next to Quickconnect.

The drop down list will then display your recent connections. Choose the one with the ftp.tigertech.net ending.

Sending an encrypted password

If you're using a modern version of your computer operating system and a recent version of FileZilla, you can make FileZilla send the password in encrypted (TLS/SSL) form, increasing security.

To do this, change the hostname you enter in Quickconnect:

Host:ftpes://ftp.tigertech.net
Username:cohousing.org (all lowercase)
Password:your account password
Port:leave blank (it will default to the correct port 21)

FileZilla will tell you that the "server's certificate is unknown" the first time you try this; you should accept the certificate and choose Always trust certificate in future sessions.

(Note that some firewalls are incompatible with FTP encryption. If you have trouble, try it without the encryption.)

Older versions of FileZilla

If you need a version of FileZilla compatible with Mac OS X 10.4, it's still possible to download the obsolete version 3.0.6.
