Why does WordPress say it’s “briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance”?
Occasionally, customers say they saw a message saying that their WordPress site is “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.”
If you see that message, it’s not coming from our servers directly, but instead from the WordPress software. It shows that message while it’s updating itself, or a plugin or theme, to a newer version.
(It does this by temporarily creating a file name .maintenance at the top level of the site, and checking whether that file is present before showing any pages.)
If your WordPress site gets stuck showing this message when you’re doing manual updates, make sure that you don’t leave the WordPress dashboard update page until it shows that the upgrade is complete. If you click away from the page before then, it can interrupt the process that turns off the maintenance mode at the end of the upgrade.
Even if it gets interrupted, WordPress should disable maintenance mode within ten minutes. If your WordPress site is stuck showing this message for longer than ten minutes, please contact us for assistance.
