Do you automatically import any DNS records when I sign up to transfer my hosting service?
When you sign up to transfer an existing domain name to our hosting service, we check the existing DNS records and import (copy) any that match these:
- Google Workspace (aka “G Suite” or “Google Apps”) MX, SPF and DKIM records, to keep your mail pointed at Google Workspace if you use their mail service
- Microsoft 365 Business (“Office 365”) MX, SPF, DKIM and CNAME records, to keep your mail pointed at Microsoft if you use their mail service
- Proton Mail MX, SPF, and DKIM records, to keep your mail pointed at Proton Mail if you use their mail service
- Mailchimp DKIM records, to ensure you can continue to use Mailchimp to send bulk email without verification problems
- Google google-site-verification=... TXT records, so that it remains verified with Google Search Console (aka “Google Webmaster Tools”)
- Microsoft MS=ms... TXT records, so that it remains verified with Microsoft
If we import MX records, the email we send when you sign up will say something like “We’ve automatically imported DNS MX records from your old company”. You can review these automatically imported records:
- Login to your Tiger Technologies “My Account” control panel (having trouble?)
- Click Domain Name Options
- Click Edit DNS Zone
If you want to delete any of these records, you can easily do so by clicking Delete next to any records you don’t want to use.
Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about any DNS records that were automatically imported — we’ll be glad to help.
Why do you import these DNS records but not other email records?
The specific DNS records above are imported both because people using those email services tend to want to keep using them even if they move their website, and because the records from these companies follow a predictable pattern (meaning we can be sure that we’ve copied all of the records we need if we see any of them).
We don’t copy other DNS records by default because most people switching to our company actually want to change their email DNS records, so copying the old ones would cause problems. In addition, unless a company uses specific patterns we know about, we couldn’t be sure that we’ve imported all of the records necessary — it’s better to import no records rather than just some of them.
If you want to copy other DNS records from the old company, you can enter them yourself:
- Login to your Tiger Technologies “My Account” control panel (having trouble?)
- Click Domain Name Options
- Click Edit DNS Zone
Alternately, we’ll be glad to enter them if you send us a screenshot or text listing of them from the old company.
