Why does viewing the WordPress dashboard “plugins” page show a phishing warning in Google Chrome?

We’ve had a couple of customers report that viewing the WordPress dashboard “plugins” page (but no other page) shows a “phishing” warning in the Google Chrome Web browser.

This warning is a “false positive”. Even though the Chrome error message claims the site has been “reported” for phishing, the warning can also be triggered by certain words on appearing on a page and in the browser URL. The WordPress plugins page contains many of those words.

If you see this warning only on the WordPress plugins page, you can safely ignore it. Deleting unused plugins, including the sample “Hello Dolly” plugin, can help avoid it.
