How do I transfer a domain name that was registered with Melbourne IT?

This page explains how to transfer a domain name from "Melbourne IT", a company that also goes by the name of "INWW" or "Internet Names World Wide". Melbourne IT frequently sells domain names through resellers; some of the steps below may require that you contact the company that sold you the domain name instead of contacting Melbourne IT directly.

(Their largest reseller is Yahoo! Domains — see our separate Yahoo! Domains page if you purchased the domain name there.)

To transfer a Melbourne IT domain name and/or Web hosting account to Tiger Technologies, just sign up for the account on our home page. You'll also want to check a few simple things at Melbourne IT to make sure the transfer goes smoothly:

Disable private registration

Melbourne IT offers a feature called "my private registration" which hides a domain's administrative contact email address. This feature needs to be disabled so that we can send an email to the administrative contact asking them to approve the transfer.

If the domain's WHOIS lookup shows an administrative contact email like "contact@myprivateregistration.com", then private registration is currently enabled, and will need to be disabled.

  1. If you aren't yet logged in, go to http://www.melbourneit.com.au/cc/maintenance/displayLoginPage and sign in using your domain name and Melbourne IT "registry key".
  2. Click Manage Domain Names, then click the domain name.
  3. If the "Private Registration" is "Active", click Active. This should change the state to "Suspended".

If you cannot disable private registration, you may need to contact Melborne IT customer service. You can use this page to contact Melbourne IT customer service.

Make sure the domain name is unlocked

Domain names that are "locked" with Melbourne IT can't be transferred. To unlock a Melbourne IT domain name:

  1. If you aren't yet logged in, go to http://www.melbourneit.com.au/cc/maintenance/displayLoginPage and sign in using your domain name and Melbourne IT "registry key".
  2. Click Manage Domain Names, then click the domain name.
  3. If the domain name is locked, click Locked. On the next page, click Unlock Domain.

Make sure your email address is correct

We'll need to send a transfer approval notice to the "administrative contact" email address that Melbourne IT has on file for your domain name. Use the Melbourne IT control panel to make sure the email address is correct:

  1. If you aren't yet logged in, go to http://www.melbourneit.com.au/cc/maintenance/displayLoginPage and sign in using your domain name and Melbourne IT "registry key".
  2. Click Manage Domain Names, then click your domain name.
  3. Click the Administrative tab (in the "Contact Details" section), then review the email address listed.
  4. If you need to change the email address, click Change Contact Details. Enter the correct email address, then click Continue.

Know your transfer authorization code

After you sign up with us, we'll send the Melbourne IT administrative contact a message asking him or her to enter the domain name's "transfer authorization code" on our Web pages. You can get this code from the Melbourne IT control panel:

  1. If you aren't yet logged in, go to http://www.melbourneit.com.au/cc/maintenance/displayLoginPage and sign in using your domain name and Melbourne IT "registry key".
  2. Click Manage Domain Names, then click your domain name.
  3. Click View Domain Password (AuthInfo) in the "Overview" section.
  4. The transfer authorization code will be displayed in the top right corner of the page.

Please note that the authorization code is case-sensitive, so when you enter it on our Web page, be sure to use the same capitalization shown at Melbourne IT.
