Can I change my Web hosting domain name?

It isn't directly possible to change the domain name attached to an existing Web hosting account, because of the way domain names work at the central registry.

However, you can switch your Web hosting to a new domain name by simply signing up for a new hosting account and canceling the old one. Because we charge no Web hosting cancellation or signup fees, it doesn't cost you anything to switch.

The drawback is that you will have to re-publish your Web site files to the new site, move any databases, edit any paths defined in your Web site's configuration files, recreate any mail addresses, copy any e-mail you want to keep, etc.

If you don't want to do that, it's much easier to get the new domain name as a domain name alias for the existing site, making your existing content available under the new domain name. This costs as little as $9.95 per year, and has the advantage that people who have bookmarked your old domain name, or added your old address to their address book, will still be able to reach you.

How to switch entirely to a new domain name

You should create the new account first, because that allows you to sign up as an existing customer with the same password, which is very quick — it fills in almost all of the signup form for you.

Just go to our home page and follow the instructions there to sign up for a new Web hosting account.

Then, to cancel the old domain name:

You'll be given the choice of what to do with your existing domain name. You can choose to abandon it entirely if you don't want it to keep working.
